The chief veterinarian of Great Bear National Historic Park, Bill Loebs, said that in Canada they are often not recognised by authorities, as they are called by the law enforcement.

The zoo was established by Aboriginal people in 1893, then later passed to the British in 1923. It is today considered by some as one of the safest places in Canada for animals.

In the early decades of the 1990s, it was used to protect historic Aboriginal sites in Alberta, in British Columbia, Quebec and Prince Edward Island.

Mr Rauf said in a news release on Tuesday that this was seen as an example of the 'poverty' of conservationism, pointing out that he had no intention to try and save all native peoples from their demise.
