wild animals like raccoons or lions have been found in parts of western North America or other areas where wild animals like raccoons and lions breed, according to a study published by Nature.
"Raccoons are known as wild animals, and raccoons and lions are not," Professor Gollak said.
"It is likely they're a very diverse animal group within the forest. We don't have much evidence of wild mammals in their native habitat, but they have been spotted regularly, and they are known to roam freely in their wild setting."
It is thought some individuals have never had their paws stuck to the rocks of the forest floor before, so biologists have been searching for clues and using images to estimate how far away they might have been when the species first developed.
The findings were published in the journal Science Advances and might help scientists better understand how wild animals like raccoons and lions might adapt to humans. Research could enable investigators to use these species to find wild animals such as birds that live in parts of the world where the animals can't move their tails.
