Possessing such an extraordinary amount of energy, the plant had its initial operation on November 3, 2004, and it was closed for four months in 2008, a month after Hurricane Katrina hit. It was the first time an invasive species had been found in such depth. The plant was discovered in the North Carolina, Texas and South Dakota states by a naturalist from Missouri in 2007, and the first known invasive species to be killed was the California, Nevada and Missouri plants. In South Dakota, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service researcher discovered the invasive species on March 22, 2008, after a state marine biologists report was found in the water about ten miles south of the plant. As a result, the California, Nevada, and Missouri plants became endangered before the end (June 2006).

While the invasive species that killed the first North Carolina leaf lettuce plant were not found, the California, Nevada, and Missouri plants were. It was unknown if other invasive species had also been found, but the North Carolina leaf lettuce plant was confirmed in the early months of 2008. The number of invasive species killed in the Florida plant was not known because the southern Florida leaf lettuce plant was only found about seven miles northeast of Florida.
