A study of several hundred thousand species of birds reveals that mating behaviour is more dependent on a reproductive state, to the same degree as that of the same sex. Similarly, data showing how individuals change with their mates suggests that it is the evolution of a single trait that leads to changes in the individual's mate choice or how he or she performs in the family as a whole.
