"A lot of these guys were hunters and kept a big supply of deer in their wild environment. The first hunters were from eastern North Carolina who were trying to catch white deer," said Jim Smith. "They shot a lot of red pelt in their wild environment."
The Red Elk's red pelt is a valuable commodity, but the animals' owners are forced to come up with a better, more environmentally responsible way to harvest the pelt.
"It's a very low-carbon, low-impact sport with a lot of potential to generate a positive result," said David O'Farrell, wildlife director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
