It is deeply disturbing to learn that at the United States Department of Agriculture today the World Wildlife Fund, the U.K.'s Environment Agency and their National Wildlife Trust also support an effort to end this systematic abuse of the animal's natural and human life. One of our foremost conservation projects has been working to protect the lives and health of millions of endangered and threatened brown bears. We also strongly support the recent release of data on this issue to the news media that include the reported release of all brown bears released to the wild at the end of October.

But this latest report does not include the information on the number of Brown Bears in the wild. So it just turns out that there are currently 3,500 Brown Bears, all of them in Western North Dakota.

The reason for this is we know there are only 6,000 to 8,000 Brown Bears in the wild. Some estimates put the total number much lower than some of the research into these bear populations in the past. But this just shows that these "brown" bears may have the potential to be threatened and kill off the thousands of people who have lived and played a key role in their decline.
