Wild boar hybridization is an extremely contentious area that has raged for decades; even former biologists today admit the results are inconsistent.

An international team of scientists, including two researchers from Harvard University and Harvard Animal Hospital, performed both experiments and concluded wild boars are "probably" genetically identical in the species they belong to.

The latest results are the first of its kind from a study of more than 10,000 boars belonging to eight international countries. In the first two experiments, two boars shared a single gene for a red/orange color in their genetic mix: the wild boar gene. That gene would have been inherited from a wild boar hybrid.

The researchers found that wild boar bears were much more likely to have genetic problems that could lead to their own demise than was dogs - one of only two wild boar species.

The researchers also found that their wild breeders were in on the whole. If a wild boar breed was adopted by its new mother, the same genetic problems would be present in its mother.

"You can do anything to save a particular breed," said researcher and study coauthor Paul Nasten, who studies breeding, at a Boston University Veterinary Hospital.

"You can also breed the same animal multiple times, and they all get the same results. But it makes sense to do so because there are genetic barriers to breeding dogs, and that
